Curriculum Video Reflection

My video is about teaching the Hidden Curriculum to students with disabilities. The Hidden Curriculum is rules that we all know but were never taught–and how a lack of these skills impacts individuals with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD). For example, most students know it’s not a good idea to tell an off-color joke in front of a teacher, even if other students think it is funny. Individuals who have ASD do not come equipped with the same ability to understand the hidden curriculum. As a result, they break a lot of social and behavioral rules without intent or even knowledge that they are doing so. It is important to teach the hidden curriculum to students with ASD because it can enhance social acceptance and self-esteem, and reduce student stress levels.

The photos that I edited with Picnik were photo number 2 (boy with his face in his hands), and the last 2 photos of the video (happy/sad faces and party picture). In photo number 2 I cropped the picture of the boy so it would fit in the movie. In the last two photos I used to text tool in Picnik to add words to the photos.

I had a great time making this movie. I really enjoy using Picnik and I plan on using it for pictures in the future, both for my classroom photos and personal photos. The video is something that I will definitely use in my class and I think that my students will really enjoy it.

Podcasts

I really enjoy podcasts. When I was in my undergraduate program, a few of my professors would tape their lessons and put them on a podcast for us to listen to. I think that they are very useful and very easy to use. After browsing through all the podcasts on iTunes, I found so many podcasts that I could use in my classroom.
The first podcast that I subscribed to was called Storynory - Stories for kids. Storynory has a new audio story every week. It is narrated by Natasha Gostwick and friends. The stories include fairy tales, new children's stories, poems, myths, and adventures. This is a podcast that I will definitely use my classroom. My students love it when stories are read to them and I think that this is something they will always look forward to. The second podcast that I subscribed to was called Why? The Science Show for Kids. This is a science show for kids where each week, Dr. Dave Brodbeck answers a question about science for students. I teach a science skills class and this would be great as a bellringer or opener for my science class. I think that the students would really enjoy it.
I am excited to start using these podcasts in my classroom and can't wait to see what my students think of them.

Animoto & Picnik

I think that a multimedia tool like Animoto can be a wonderful addition to a classroom. I had so much fun making this video. It was simple and easy and I feel like anyone could make one, even my students. I would definitely use a tool like this in the future to pre-teach things in my classroom. It is a great way to catch my students attention and get them involved in a topic before I even begin to teach it. I also feel like this would be a great tool for my students to use as well. They could make their own projects and have fun while doing it. I am really excited about Animoto, and I plan on using it in my classroom very soon!

I also really enjoyed using Picnik for this project. It made it so easy to edit pictures and it made the pictures I edited look really good. I also really appreciated the fact that it was very easy and fast to upload my pictures onto Picnik. When I edited my pictures, I used the "Auto-fix" and "Crop" tools. The Auto-fix tool was great. I was able to edit a photo with just one click. I never knew this site existed, but I am glad it does.

I can honestly say that I will be using these two multimedia tools in the future. I think that they are both very user friendly and very fun to work with. I had a great time making this project and I plan on making more for my classroom!
